Natural Hair Diary: A Quick Newsboy Cap Styling

During the winter, as I managed my children’s education (part-time), work, and life, I recorded a hair video! I know, I know, it’s been years! To be honest, I wasn’t sure if and when I’d pick up a hair post that felt right. I’ve spent the year transitioning from blonde to my natural hair color, and that felt complex and grand. It deserves posts and storytelling of its own in due time. Outside of that, there were many days I just did my hair. As a form of care. And taping it, as a form of education and possibly, resistance, in particularly trying times.

As the months went on and our city opened up bit by bit, the video faded to the back. My children went back to school. Doing my hair was (and is) still an important aspect of my care. But the why has distilled, naturally. Nevertheless, I am trying quite hard to not shut the door on that time in life. Which, if I’m being honest and know my own response, is to bury this video and this winter behind some door.

Looking at this video now though, in full, I am not scared of it. I am inspired by the way I did my hair late one evening. And yes, the lazily done tricks and tips, still, very much apply! No matter if it’s winter or spring, a pandemic or a season where the end is tangibly in sight, here’s a quick cap video for you (which is kind of hilarious in my humble opinion).

Things I used:

A wide-tooth comb for parting

A denman brush for smoothing

Miss Jessie’s Honey Curl for the curls

Eco Styling Gel for keeping it tight

And elastics for sealing.

Are you wearing any (or a lot) of hats lately? More hair talk right this way!

Lol I love this. My haie is in a twist out for two weeks but i wanna wear my new bucket hats. I can braid (I put braids my hair I’m doing twist next) so I can do this. I need to remember to put gel in first brush it like you did. It will look neater. I’m saving this. I also saved it on Instagram. Thx a bunch

Lol Im obsessed with this video! I truly felt like we were just two girls together doing our hair-it felt so authentic and pure. The fact that you were so raw and imperfect made it absolutely perfect. Thanks for that. Iv’e been looking for more ideas for hairstyles and this is perf!
