Have You Had A Staycation?

The snow fell hard today (and is still falling), and it made me think of this staycation River and I had at The Bowery Hotel to celebrate her 10th birthday a few weeks back. We took long bubble baths, danced to Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and ordered mocktails with the creamiest pasta. There were cupcakes courtesy of The Bowery, and when we woke up, the city was so beautifully quiet as the sun rose above our bed. Sugared pancakes made their way around 8 in the morning, and I realized just how special the last 16 or so hours was.

Perhaps it was her birthday (such a big one!), or it was just simply getting away and enjoying our city in a special way? New York City is the perfect place to re explore when time allows. These days, I explore it with different and sincerely gracious eyes.

This evening with a few feet of snow in the city, I cant stop thinking about finding somewhere else for us to enjoy (locally and safely) during their mid-winter break this month.

Have you had a staycation recently? If not, is there a routine you’ve taken up to make your home feel like a staycation? Today, we had a movie on the couch (wild for a Monday) and I lit a few candles once the kids went to sleep.

I live near Toronto in Canada and before the pandemic I found a book called 111 Places in Toronto You Must Not Miss. It is full of weird and quirky things all around the city (art, history, food, shops , museums, etc.) As I was recently retired I decided to see all of them – a sort of Staycation, if you will. I made it to about 40 of them before Covid locked us all down. Now I have the rest to look forward to in the After Time.

My mother made my 10th birthday a special event that I’ve not forgotten to this day, some 26 years later. I truly felt like A Grown Up. It’s an incredibly special memory to me and one I’m sure River will remember always.

Sarah, I love that you had that experience and it still is so very important to you. Looking back, I’m going to hold to that day a bit more closely because of your comment. Thank you so much
