Gift Guide: Care In The Bedroom

As I type this, my bedroom has a high mountain of laundry waiting for me to fold, there’s a duvet hanging on my closet waiting to be placed on a bed. Boxes are beside me, waiting to be unboxed and a cup of lemon water is on my desk waiting to be consumed. In the kids’ room, there’s their very own tree with colorful lights and years of hand-made ornaments. Their corners are less organized than mine, but as a scene, it looks much more pulled together. These rooms have become other rooms within rooms. I’m thankful for the space that has stretched and the imaginations that are able to grow.

While walls remain between my kids’ room and my own, more often than not, it feels like there aren’t any. And as such, this “room” gift guide encompasses all bedrooms of all ages, sizes, and desires. Yes, toys too.

This year, each guide will be centered around the rooms in our home and will be majority women and Black-owned. This is for many reasons, along with the obvious. Here’s more…

A sandstone nightgown for a cousin to feel a bit of romantic magic for a party of one.

A Harlem Toile Sonos & Color Of Change SL for your aunt whose moves go on well through the evening, no matter if it’s a BBQ or in her very own bedroom.

Cozy organic cotton socks from Pansy (I truly love them) for your friend who spends more days than not sliding across the wooden floor from one computer to the next, doing her best impersonation of mom and part-time teacher.

A weighted blanket for your friend who could use a calming cuddle as they spend a winter alone in their apartment. While you’re at it, you can get one for your daughter’s school friend too! The hand-knitted pure organic Bearaby blankets help people feel reassured and relaxed.

A soft-touch Vibe from Maude (in the prettiest green) for yourself, because post holiday fun needs to be enjoyed by all when the sun goes down (or up… your call).

A Come Together poster for your niece’s room because the message this season and the next is one that truly matters to the youngest among us.

One of the best books of 2020 for your sister’s nightstand, to keep her howling with laughter after long work days.

A vintage embossed tea canister for your daughter who is keen on taking up more hobbies this winter, which requires endless little things. They can be made all the more pretty with a bit of vintage.

A “Prayer Plant” for your elderly neighbor who won’t be leaving their room much this winter. But they can still watch this gorgeous plant grow as the leaves fold out and in when the days move along..

An All Natural Room Spray for your in-laws that support mental clarity, mood improvement, and reduces insomnia via Blk + GRN to spray on their pillows before bed.

A Save The Galgo sweater for your son, who rarely wears pajamas to bed, but would most definitely wear a sweater! When you purchase this product Mini Rodini will donate 20 % of the price to Galgos del Sol, a dog shelter in Murcia, Spain.

A framed photograph snapped this year for grandparents to put in their room, of someone they likely miss the most.

While we gather and move about and in our rooms, we know that we are so lucky to have them! This year, please consider a donation gift in someone’s honor in support of New Alternatives.

“New Alternatives increases the self-sufficiency of LGBTQ+ homeless youth and young adults by enabling them to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives. We do this by providing long-term support, weekly case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and programs for HIV+ youth. Our guiding principles are those of harm reduction, youth development, and empowerment.”
