I love door knockers like nobody’s business. Thick with different shapes, thin and flat, round and steady, while remaining light. They made a huge comeback over the last few years, with everyone wearing them for what felt like thousands of shoots and fashion shows. With them, outfits by strangers seemed interesting and cool, in an instant. And while others threw down for price tags that crawled over a hundred dollars (and sometimes more), I stuck with the beauty supply store, or a cheap pair from & Other Stories.
All of these pairs remain in good condition, and I had plans to wear them with every single spring blazer and summer dress my heart desired while dreaming of warmer days this winter. Insert the mask, a new style must, making care as community and fashion rounds, at once. It is inarguably a must. But, my ears aren’t convinced my old ways of earring use work with the sometimes-cumbersome use of a mask.
Too many things on the face? Strings too long? Ears pulled too tight? Do the door knockers grab a hold of the extra fabric while running, for far too long?
I know in the grand scheme, these questions are tiny and irrelevant, but lately I’ve been wondering how everyone is fairing on earrings? I mean, I know people go out less than before. But in my case, I don’t look like me without earrings.
While on tour last spring and needing to rotate my earrings with my outfits, I started purchasing light weight, colorful resin earrings. They were earrings that didn’t seem cheap or too expensive. They weren’t heavy, but also not so light in which I’d forget I was wearing earrings to begin with. They did this very-in between job, and it was fun to play up my eye shadow in contrast to my earring color.

Here are a few that I love: A Tortoise Resin pair, multi-colored resin hoops, striped amber pair and finally, this lime color by Alison Lou.
Now with a new face addition, I’m leaning on those a bit more. But wondering, what is everyone else wearing these days?

Hi LaTonya!
I love a good tortoiseshell hoop! I’ve been wearing earrings almost daily since your style workshop, they really make an outfit feel pulled together. One of my favorites is a light rattan crescent shaped pair! ❤️
Love that so much, Elizabeth! And really so happy that the workshop is still helping inspire some looks!
Can’t wait to hear more.
Sending love,
L
I just realized I don’t think I’ve worn earrings since the last day I went to my office, which was march 19. I am still working but don’t have to do video calls, thankfully. I also don’t think i look like myself without earrings, but I’ve definitely slipped into a long stretch of irregular showering and sweats and sleeplessness and boredom/anxiety/so.much.work during quarantine. I’m not myself right now, not completely. Maybe I’ll wear a pair soon, just for fun. I bet it would feel good!
Hi Liz,
I totally 1000% understand you! I do think it helps so much (though it takes SO MUCH ENERGY) to take a shower throw on some earrings etc. I realize that when I delay it or don’t, by day is consistently coming undone by the seams throughout the minutes. It’s so odd how much of a big difference it makes. But it is also SO SO hard. So I hear you. In my styling course, I tasked the ladies with prepping the night before and just giving themselves a nudge (especially when they’ve been in a cycle). Hope this helps. And I also know, there’s a season for everything.
But yes, earrings are always a bit fun. 😉
I love the tortoiseshell resin earrings look and don’t know why I haven’t bought a pair yet. But back when Covid-19 was just starting to hit the US I bought some pottery from a friend of mine’s small business and she sent me a pair of polymer clay earrings as a thank you. I’ve worn them almost every time I go out now. It’s become part of my ritual with donning my mask and tying my shoes. Here’s her website if you’re interested. She makes beautiful pottery and jewelry. https://www.halflighthoney.com/
oh i love her pieces. thank you for sharing 🥰
I’ve only worn very small sleeper hoops since the quarantine started. I find that if I don’t wear earrings for a week or longer, my the piercings in my ears start to heal over. So I thought I’d better put something comfortable in them for the long haul. I’m not working, just home with the kids, and I haven’t thought much about jewelry in the past few weeks. But I love the tortoise shell hoops!
