May I Suggest: Watch (Or Listen To) Amazing Grace

Tonight while vacuuming the kids’ room as they watched a movie in the living room, I felt a pull to play the Amazing Grace album from Aretha Franklin. Have you listened to it?

It’s from her very very early days, and the movie was released after she passed away. I watched it at BAM when it was showing and was so moved. I felt home. I felt comforted. I felt connected to the 90s, my family in Brooklyn, and just a inner soul movement that only Aretha and those songs could pull from me.

Neverthless, tonight, as we inch closer to a holiday that many of us are observing, I thought of it. I suppose I was also called to listen to it because of a video I watched of a nurse singing Amazing Grace with other nurses, too. This album is just different though. My soul was settled.

I hope you watch the movie this weekend, and listen to the album tonight or tomorrow, if you have a moment.

What have you been listening to lately?

I watched it with family and enjoyed it as well. I never saw a young Aretha perform before.

I don’t know if I should feel scared or hopeful these days. But for the days I feel mostly scared I always find comfort in the Ella Fitzgerald-album Hello Love. I just find it beautiful and mellow. I’ll try Aretha as well!
