A Salon night, I kind of feel fancy just saying it. As we welcome 2020, a need for more community is evident. It is hard to gauge how we tackle this. For me, in a sense, it is a desire to go back to a time when people got dressed up, gathered in little back rooms, chain smoked, read each other’s work and gained more knowledge and care to push through without worry. And in a different and similar way, the Beauty Salon and how women found safety and ways to pass down stories and gather through these community institutions, has been on my mind as a deep desire too.As we begin the year, I’m happy to announce Pestañas, a salon style monthly reading and discussion night focused on essays with an emphasis on beauty, hosted by myself and my dear friend, Rubi Jones of This is Salon.
Our first night of Pestañas is January 29th. Details to RSVP and a PDF to the piece (The V Word, from Woman Of Color) right here.
What are some ways in which you plan to build community this year?

What a beautiful idea and so inspiring. This picture is stunning! I am so inspired by the way you move in your life.
Oh, thank you so much Flor! This was the sweetest and much needed today!
I’m so excited about the Salon and the community that will come from it.

I want to start a bimonthly crafting circle…just sitting around doing handwork: mending, knitting, crochet, whatever. talking. drinking. maybe foot massages?! Your salon idea sounds so much better, but by evening time my brain is mush.
I totally hear you! I do think it helps doing it with one other person, so your brain isn’t as mushy-or you share that space with someone else. I know doing it *with Rubi is the key. Or else, it’s too much!
Your idea sounds so wonderful!

Hi LaTonya, a quick hello and note to say I appreciate your blog ever so much since I am on a one year hiatus off Instagram and only get to see you here. Thank you for keeping up with this space for those of us being mindful of the “scrolling.”
Thank you Janet for the note (and encouragement).
It’s been so nice returning here in the new year (for the 8th year!) and pointing folks’ eyes towards deeper and more intentional conversations , that have little to do with scrolling.
I hope the new year is treating you well,
L
