The other day I saw a woman wearing a leopard slip dress, booties, a tiny bag and a thin cream jacket layered over her dress. It was perfect for the early morning chill. The heel of the boot being small enough to spend a day running around to meetings. The coat, being light enough to toss off when the day inevitably warmed up in the afternoon. Her hair was up and she wore big gold hoops.
The next day I saw her again…
This time with what looked to be a leopard skirt and a light black sweater and the same booties. I soon realized that the skirt wasn’t really a skirt. It was the dress with a sweater on top.
Today, I saw her again. With another leopard dress (obviously different from her last), and a pastel yellow jacket and booties. All of this to say, I was delighted to see someone wear much of the same but so different.
Ever since I wore this Mara Hoffman dress for my release party, I’ve been thinking about all of the ways I could potentially wear it. But mostly, how every little change makes one thing slightly more wearable. This is great for the many of us who are concerened about our everyday footprint on this earth, and how we can consciously tweak our own systems resulting in a larger impact.
While wearing and buying vintage is great, so is making sure you get the most wear out of everything you have in your closet. And when the wearing of anything seems boring or un-styled, it’s as simple as slight changes that actually speak to the contrary.
For instance, I wore this dress with a vintage belt and vintage sliides. But for a 75 degree day, I wore it unbelted with a pair of Air Max 95 sneakers and chunky hoops. Doing ever-so slight changes from the last time I wore the dress, made the look feel totally different. More than that, I felt so very different.
And speaking of feeling different with clothes, I spoke with ladies of the Forever35 podcast about this topic (therapy and community, too)! And it went live today.
Do you have anything in your closet that you often repeat?
